Budi considers transportation area dynamic Industries, which requires its player to keep adapting new tasks and challenges every day in the pursuit of a sustainable business. However, the challenges have shaped Taurus Gemilang in its expertise to attend different tenders, create new idea and concepts for each different area. “Our role is to give the best service, concept and nice experience for the customers and let them heaving value for money of F&B outlets and lounges.” says Budi, CEO of Taurus Gemilang.

The company was founded in 1989 by Budi’s mother Pop Mulhadi with and executive lounge in Juanda International Airport, Surabaya. Since 6 years old, Budi has been taken by his mother to join the meeting the client or working in the company’s operations.

Handled directly by the owner, Taurus Gemilang’s executive lounges over local food delights with a heart-warming service for the passengers to revive or simply chill, regardless they are traveling for business or leisure. The passengers can also get tampered before their departure by having reflexology and massages, as well as use the facilities include praying room, smoking room and toilet.

The company’s achievement in providing outstanding executive lounges as gained attention from banking industry. Over the years, Taurus Gemilang cooperated with several banks, credit card provider includes citibank and cellular operators.

A part from the airport lounges in 2005 Taurus Gemilang expanded its foray into F&B business. Budi has joined the company in 2010 and in 2013 he pointed out remarkable achievement, when Taurus Gemilang won the bidding process for providing several F&B outlets in Juanda International Airport, I Gusti Ngurah Rai International airport and Sultan Aji Muhammad Sulaiman Sepinggan Airport, Balikpapan. For his accomplishment, Pop passed the lead to Budi. According to Budi, Pop is the best mentor who taught him for always seeking the opportunity.

Right after Taurus Gemilang started managing the F&B area, I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport hit exponential revenue growth of commercial area, thanks to the company’s tremendous effort as well as improvement and expansion at the airport. Under the leadership of Budi, Taurus Gemilang booked 350% revenue growth. Has not been satiated, in 2014 Taurus Gemilang was trusted to operate F&B outlets in International terminal at I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport.

Last March 2017, I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport, operated by state-owned PT Angkasa Pura I, received a prestigious international award as “The 3rd World Best Airport 2016″ for category of airport with 15-25 million annual passengers.

I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Aiport received the award based on a survey of Airport Service Quality (ASQ), the only global benchmarking program which measures passengers satisfactory at the airports.  The survey was done by the world’s leading airport organization, the Montreal-based Airport Council International (ACI). Previously in 2015, I Gusti Ngurah Rai International Airport also received the same achievement as the world’s third best airport.

In 2016, Taurus Gemilang won the biggest country tender for operating F&B area in Airside Domestic Terminal 3 Ultimate Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. The tender was held by PT Angkasa Pura II and attended by more than 30 companies from national and multinational. Pursuant to which is ,Taurus Gemilang was appointed to manage a 3,261 sqm F&B area, where it provides global and local culinary brands with comfort atmosphere and international standard service. later 2017 at the same airport, it won the tender for operating a 3,000 sqm domestic lounge in Terminal 3 Ultimate, which will be the biggest lounge in Indonesia. Today, Taurus Gemilang is the master concessionaire in Soekarno-Hatta International Airport.

With state-of-the-art experience in the hospitality and F&B business, Taurus Gemilang has managed International F&B brands include Burger King. It just won the master franchise license of Singapore-based tea cafe Chaiholics for operating its outlet in the country.

Beside international brands. Taurus Gemilang is committed to support the virtue of local brands by the opening of Made’s Warung Kita, Warung Koffie Batavia, Papabunz, Hong Tang, Bekal dari Ibu, Liberica, Ramen Sanpachi, Warung Tekko, Steak Hotel Holycow and Baso Afung. Most important of these outlets are not only the best for meals, but are also “instragramable” places. With great interior design, beautiful ambience and unique concept, the F&B outlets of Taurus Gemilang are the best choice for customers to spend time with family and colleagues.

Budi says, one of the advantages of Taurus Gemilang is its capability to research the customers’ habit in transportation area. “We have a strong team with a focus on analyzing the customers’ habit in transportation area. The market analysis finds us one step ahead compared to other players. I have learned that from my mother,” he says. It also uphold gender balance, having 90% of employees at management level of females.

Budi keeps the company growing rapidly, supported by the cooperation with 30 brands. Its endeavor in the industry has brought the company winning over seven awards include one of which as the “Best Lounge Operator in Indonesia”. The company also obtained ISO 9001:2008 for quality management system.

Due to high demand, Budi plans to continue expanding the network of Taurus Gemilang, both in existing and new airport. Last year, it turned up with DragonPass, a digital airport platform which offers travelers to locate and access more than 800 international airport executive lounges in over 100 countries.

Budi learns critical values from his parents Mulhadi Sarah and Pop Mahadi, both are now commissioners of Taurus Gemilang, who told him there is nothing impossible if the company find out the opportunity, set the strategies to achieve it and know the best time to execute the strategies. One of the keys of their success that inherited to Budi is how to gain and retain people trust. He believes that the trust from stakeholders would only emerged by only keeping a highly commitment to give more benefits and privileges to the customers. “If we succeed, believe that the mother’s prayer is being heard.” It seems that the phrase is very appropriate when it is juxtaposed with the story behind the development of Taurus Gemilang, a company that is engaged in the field of   Lounges and Food & Beverages for the transportation area at various airports in seven major cities in Indonesia that  are now led by Budi Purnomo. It started as a family business in 1989; his mother was the first one who built this  business and left a trail of success for her kid. Since he was six years old, little Budi was given the opportunity by his mother to go directly to see her daily life as a successful business woman during her era. “She is a mother who has always been taking care of her kids. So since childhood, when she was working, I was always invited and could see how she became a very good mentor, because for every decision she have made, I was there,” he said. Established with an  initial concept as an executive lounge operator who built the first executive lounge at Juanda International Airport, Surabaya, Taurus Gemilang has developed into the largest and most trusted executive lounge operator in Indonesia.

As time went by, Budi was given the opportunity to take control of the company after the company had been managed by his mother for more than 20 years. Joining Taurus Gemilang in 2010, Budi did not just stick with the company’s initial concept. He never stopped bringing new innovations into this family company. Only two years later, Budi found an opportunity that could allow Taurus Gemilang to develop more brilliantly. Budi also expanded his business concept from being merely executive lounge operator to F&B operator for transportation area and in 2013 surprisingly Taurus Gemilang managed to win the tender to manage F & B tenants at Ngurah Rai International Airport, Bali. Since then, Budi is fully trusted to take over the Taurus Gemilang, making Taurus Gemilang not only a kinship based company, but also a professional in its field. It’s proven by the success of Taurus Gemilang and trusted to manage the F&B  tenants in Terminal 3 Ultimate, Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, Tangerang, Banten at more than 3000 sqm area in 2016 and a year later Taurus Gemilang will build a lounge at the same terminal and airport with also more than 3000 sqm area and rumored to be the largest lounge in Indonesia.

Jakarta, Surabaya, Bali, Makassar, Balikpapan, Pekanbaru, and Jambi are a number of cities that have been explored by Taurus Gemilang. Having more than 40 F & B outlets and executive lounges scattered at various airports in the big cities does not necessarily make Taurus Gemilang strip off the distinctive features of each city. For Budi, running a business in Indonesia is very profitable and has its own challenges as well. As a country with more than 18,000 islands, each island must have its own  speciality or interest. That is the mainstay concept for Taurus Gemilang while building F&B tenants and executive lounges. Always displaying the artistic features of a city and providing a development with a modern concept balanced with satisfying service, it certainly can give the traveller many memorable moments and can reduce their stress levels after a good meal, taking a break at the booth owned by Taurus Gemilang.


 

Despite being a pioneer for 27 years, Taurus Gemilang never forgets the quality of the tenants that will join, “we always seek the best quality from the vendors that will work together. That is also to increase their product sales and their quality to become international standard.” However, Taurus Gemilang also does not close the opportunity to cooperate with F&B tenants which are still traditional and still simple. “As long as they have good quality, Taurus Gemilang will always try to make them keep growing better by collaborating with us. So, in terms of brands, Taurus Gemilang does not always choose big brands, but we see the potential of the brands itself,” says Budi.

As a successful business man and also having recieved valuable lessons from his business woman mom, Budi has his own way of surviving in a competitive business world. There are three factors that have made it possible to make Taurus Gemilang into what it is today, namely always seeking out new opportunities, setting up goals, and belief in the process. 34 year old Budi has proven that he is able to lift a big company like Taurus Gemilang into having a future that matches his name, “Gemilang” (as “Bright” in english). Since Taurus Gemilang has been under Budi’s leadership in 2013, there is no doubt that the company has shot up substanitally with a growth in turnover up to 350%. Not only cognizant about the quantity of income that he produces, Budi is also very concerned and thoughtful about the quality of the team he has. He always makes sure that he has a team that is ready to face all the challenges that would need to be approached. Because for him, the business world is a very dynamic place and when he has a solid team, whatever happens, Taurus Gemilang will always be a company that can not just survive but thrive.

Anda sukses memimpin perusahaan di usia muda. Apa definisi bisnis menurut Anda? Bisnis adalah bagaimana kita mampu melihat peluang yang tidak dilihat orang lain, dan mampu mengeksekusinya dengan sempurna. Bagaimana cara Anda memimpin perusahaan dengan skala besar seperti Taurus Gemilang? Saya memberi contoh kepada pegawai dan memberikan kepercayaan untuk menjalankannya tanpa harus takut mengalami kegagalan. Dari mana Anda mempelajarinya? Saya mempelajarinya dari orang tua, terutama dari ibu saya. Beliau selalu memberikan contoh kepada para pegawai, karena beliau yakin jika hanya memerintahkan tanpa memberi contoh bagaimana melaksanakannya, pegawai belum tentu mampu menjalankannya dengan sempurna.
Seperti apa sosok ibu di mata Anda? Ibu adalah mentor terbaik. Dia mengajarkan untuk selalu membuka mata pada setiap kesempatan yang ada, dan melakukan check and recheck. Kedua hal ini selalu saya ingat dan jalankan. Apakah Anda dipersiapkan untuk menjalankan perusahaan ini sejak dini? Tidak! (Dia menjawabnya dengan tegas). Saya bergabung dengan PT Taurus Gemilang pada tahun 2010. Tiga tahun berselang (2013), kami melakukan tender internasional pertama kami (bandara Ngurah Rai Bali). Tender ini sangat penting bagi PT Taurus Gemilang, dan kami berhasil memenangkannya berdasarkan konsep yang saya berikan. Setelah pembuktian serta hasil tersebut, barulah tongkat kepemimpinan tersebut diberikan kepada saya. Di bawah kepemimpinan saya pula, bisnis PT Taurus Gemilang merambah dari hanya lounge ke area F&B dan kini menjalankan delapan lounge serta lebih dari 30 outlet F&B di tujuh bandara di Indonesia.

   Pertumbuhan bisnis (bukan hanya lounge saja, tapi juga dalam bisnis secara umum), tentu berdampak pada peningkatan revenue. sebesar apa peningkatannya? Sejak tahun 2013, pertumbuhan penjualan mencapai 350% Apa tantangan terbesar yang pernah Anda hadapi saat memimpin PT Taurus Gemilang? Tantangan yang terbesar ketika melakukan tender
pengelolaan lounge dan outlet F&B di Terminal 3 Bandara Sukarno Hatta, Jakarta. Tender tersebut diikuti lebih dari 30 perusahaan lokal serta luar negeri, dan kami berhasil memenangkannya. Sementara dalam konteks tantangan ekonomi, kami yakin konsep value for money mampu menarik konsumen. Ketika mereka memasuki outlet kami mereka mendapatkan pelayanan yang baik, merasakan nilai makanannya,
jadi walaupun mereka mengeluarkan uang di gerai kami, mereka puas. Apa yang Anda lakukan agar PT Taurus Gemilang selalu memenangkan persaingan? Pertama, Anda harus menentukan tujuan yang ingin dicapai dan percaya kepada proses. Kami mempunyai tim yang kuat dan fokus menganalisa orang-orang di area transportasi. Melalui analisa tersebut, kami memiliki keunggulan yang tidak dimiliki perusahaan lain. Bagaimana cara Anda meyakinkan client? SOP kami sangat baik dan tajam di area transportasi, semua karena pengalaman dan pemahan kami di area transportasi. Akhirnya client yang sebelumnya memiliki standar sendiri dapat melihat perbedaan yang kami tawarkan dan mengambil manfaat.


Bisnis F&B identik dengan wanita. Seberapa banyak pegawai wanita di PT TG? 90% pegawai di level manajemen adalah wanita. Mengapa? Karena saya mendapatkan contoh dari ibu saya. Wanita itu multi tasking, diberi pekerjaan dan tanggung jawab apa saja, mereka selalu mampu melakukannya. Bahkan pegawai pertama PT Taurus Gemilang adalah wanita dan sampai sekarang masih berkarya. Apa yang membuat mereka loyal? Prinsip perusahaan ini adalah kekeluargaan. Saya menambahkannya menjadi kekeluargaan yang profesional. Jadi saya menentukan standar yang jelas, menjalankan perusahaan dengan prinsip kekeluargaan namun mereka juga belajar untuk bersaing secara sehat. Konsep ini sangat berhasil. Apa langkah selanjutnya dari PT Taurus Gemilang? Kami akan melakukan perluasan bisnis usaha lounge F&B di area transportasi seperti di pelabuhan, MRT (mass rapid transportation), dan stasiun kereta. Kini kami sedang mematangkan konsep-konsep tersebut dan melakukan negosiasi dengan beberapa pihak. Sehingga pada saat infrasruktur pelabuhan, kereta api, dan MRT sudah siap, kami mampu memberikan konsep-konsep yang sesuai.
